Housewarming Party! Apartment Above Luke's, Friday Afternoon Till Evening

Raven and Kathy were officially moved in!

Okay, not everything was done and most of their stuff was still at Eliot's, but they'd gotten a lot of work done painting and assembling furniture and most of what was left could be moved over a bit at a time. Which meant...it was close enough to being fully moved in that a small party was warranted. Especially if you were looking for a way to show you were nice, sane and adjusted a reason to party!

The party proper started at 6pm with plenty of delicious foods to enjoy, but people were more than welcome to come over early and help with the remaining wall painting and furniture assembling there was to do. Help was appreciated, but mostly people were invited to over to eat, relax, and help make this new place feel like a real home.

If you want to show up early, you can grab a paint roller or a set of allen wrenches and help out!

Alluka had shown up early! Mostly because... well, because she liked being helpful, she really did. Also she liked getting hugs from Kathy and Raven had been fun on the IKEA trip, so why wouldn't she show up early?

And once she'd been shown how to use a paint roller (she'd carefully stuck Mr. Bubbles somewhere safe so he wouldn't get paint on himself) she was doing pretty okay at helping!

Once she'd confirmed that any paint currently on her hands was dry, Raven sidled up next to Alluka, as though hiding a secret.

"Psst," she whispered. "Look what I ended up getting."

And she held up a little stuffed toy cactus.

Alluka loved secrets!

But toys were hard to keep secret since they delighted her so!

She made a squeal of delight that was hastily stifled. Alluka made no move to touch it, since she didn't want to get paint on it, but she beamed at both Raven and the cactus.

"It's adorable," she said brightly. "Where you going to keep it?"

It wasn't really much of a secret, so Raven didn't mind that squeal of delight at all.

It was even the reaction she'd been going for.

"I've got a little cabinet to go under one of my windows in my room," she said. "I think it'll go nice right there. So it can get lots of sunlight."

Which was important for a stuffed cactus.

Kathy, clad in the oldest clothes she could find, slapped her paint roller on the wall and laughed at the spatters. They'd be covered over by fresh paint in a moment, she wasn't too worried.

"Do you wanna wear an old shirt of mine?" Kathy asked. "I'd hate for you to get paint all over your clothes."

"But then you wouldn't have one of your shirts," Alluka said reasonably. "And, and I don't really mind."

Well, she did, but what if Kathy didn't have very many clothes left after being all gone and then coming back with nothing?

Ringo had, of course, shown up early to help. After all, there was furniture to be assembled, and Ringo was pretty good with tools.

But now she was scowling at the paper with instructions. "These don't make any sense! How is this even supposed to work?" She built impossibly complicated AirTrek systems for fun and she couldn't figure out what she was supposed to do with all these stupid screws.

Raven peeked over her shoulder. "So . . . I get the whole 'not everyone can read the same language' theory, but they could have at least some words, right?"

"Or at least diagrams that make sense," Ringo scowled.

"And what's this supposed to be?" she demanded, holding up a skinny piece of metal. "How is anyone supposed to assemble anything if this is what they give you to do it? Why can't we get some real tools?"

"Are they upside down?" Kathy asked, frowning over the instructions. "Or--I don't know if that picture is even related."

Raven was liberally splattered with paint even by the time the pre-party people arrived. On the one hand, at least her clothes wouldn't stain.

On the other, the latex paint was proving a pain to wash off her scales, too.

It was even worse with when Kathy attempted to sneak up on Raven and swipe a paint brush down her back.

This would end well.

This time last year, Kathy would have gotten an startled squeak and then playful retaliation. Now, Kathy got a full throated roar and a retaliation that included claws and fangs. Raven didn't go full bear, but "defend with death" was still very much her primary setting.

Good thing Kathy was fast?

Eliot showed up early with two sets of tools and two aprons -- one for construction, one for cooking. Not that he didn't expect Kathy and Raven were perfectly capable of handling either on their own, but, well. It was a dad thing. He liked to be helpful.

"Handyman's on deck," he called when he came in. "Where do you girls need me?"

"NOPE," Raven said, pointing a butter covered paint brush at him with a paint covered hand. "MY KITCHEN. OUT."

That pot roast was going to be dry as a bone and tough as leather but she was going to make it, dammit. Kathy wanted a dinner party and Raven was going to do her part.

Eliot set down the cooking tools and apron, raised his now free hand, and laughed. "Yes'm." He knew better than to argue with that tone. "Just -- that roast is gonna be a little --"

"Eliot!" Kathy wailed from the bathroom. "These fixtures are of the devil!"

"I'm gonna assume you don't mean the literal devil," Eliot said as he headed back. "But I can call the chapel just in case. . . ." He poked his head in, toolbox in tow. Fortunately, it included some plumbing and electrical supplies. "You know there were perfectly good fixtures in here already, right?"

Anders hadn't seen Dante in a few days, and he realized he was disappointed when he got up to Kathy and Raven's apartment and found his roommate still nowhere in sight. Even if things between Dante and Kathy were weird, free food usually brought him out.

He shrugged it off as best as he could and grabbed a boxed bookshelf. That seemed like about the limit of his carpentry skills.

"Anders, hi!"

Kathy, have some chill.

Still, her smile of greeting was bright as she bounced over to him, a swipe of sunshiny yellow paint on her cheek and some lavender flecks in her hair. "Glad you could come. Is Dante coming later? He promised me a bottle of vodka."

Anders returned the greeting before shaking his head, faintly puzzled. "He hasn't been home in a few days. I thought maybe he was helping you get things set up."

He'd hoped that, anyhow. It was a more pleasant thought than the Limbo City possibility.

Hardison was intrigued to see what his TA got up to with his old place. Hell, even if he wasn't, he never would have let his TA move into a brand new place without his help. He was handier than he looked, even.

"You sure you don't want me to paint your portrait as a mural on the wall?" he asked. "I'm great at that. Ask Nate."

"I don't actually know Nate," Raven pointed out. "And I'm not sure I'm a mural person? But if you wanted to paint something smaller. . . ."

"Nate's the guy that got us all together," Hardison explained, stretching the truth just slightly. He was the one who'd kept them all together, which was far more important. "Grumpy old drunk an' almost as good a mastermind as Parker."
