The Apartment Above Luke's, Thursday Evening

Kathy was still glowing from yesterday's museum trip with Anders and now tonight Dante was coming over for the evening, too. She appreciated the lengths they were going to make sure she didn't feel too lonely or lost while she was still adjusting to being back. She'd had a whole evening planned out as a thank you to Dante over it...

But then there had been puppies. She'd come in from her shower and decided to take a minute to refresh her Tumblr before drying off and getting dressed, and then she'd stumbled over a link for a pet adoption website that curated pictures of dogs that needed to be adopted from nearby shelters if you put in your zip code. Which Kathy, more fool her, had done.

And now was scrolling through picture after picture of adorable romping puppies and distinguished older dogs all looking for forever homes and who even knew what time it was anymore, there were puppies.

Dante wasn't sure why she was smiling, but he didn't ask. Instead he held out a spoon for her, and hopped onto the sofa as soon as she'd taken it. "Pffft."

"Oh?" Kathy asked, raising an eyebrow as she snagged the spoon. "Please then. Tell me all about this candle collection you have. Is it for all those romantic evenings you have planned?"

"The first week sometimes the lights would go out," Dante said, peeling the lid off the pint.

Kathy shivered, involuntarily. "Glad you got that sorted, then," she said. "Though you have heard of these newfangled inventions called flashlights, right?"

"Yeah, but I didn't want to run around leaving flashlights around the house until we got shit sorted out with the electrical company," Dante said, waving his spoon around.

"...But leaving candles around was a better idea?" Kathy asked, not following that logic.

One was a fire hazard, for example.

"They're cheap and you can get them in bulk," Dante said, shrugging.

"Fire damage is expensive, though," Kathy teased. "I'm getting you battery-powered lanterns for your birthday."

"Hey, knock yourself out. Me and electrical have an understanding now," Dante said, and dug into the ice cream.

Kathy let him have the first few bites before she went for a spoonful of her own. "That sounds like you went and hung someone out a window by their ankles or something."

"I'm not revealing my secrets," Dante told her.

"Fine, but now you're not allowed to be surprised if I call on you to come to an understanding with my utilities," Kathy teased, snuggling back close to him again.

"Ah, but see that, I can make happen," Dante said, kissing her temple. "Just point me at the things to look scary at."

"Between you and Dad, I'm just going to unleash ferocious scowls at everything in my life that's frustrating, just watch."

She sounded pleased by that prospect, honestly.

"It's all you ever wanted," Dante agreed.

"Aww, you know me so well!" Kathy said, laughing. "Puppies, ice cream, and scowls at mine enemies. What more could a girl ask for?"

"Really fucking hot sex?" Dante asked, winking. "We'll get to that after the ice cream and the puppies."

He spooned out another mouthful.

"I bet the puppies are negotiable, but the ice cream isn't," Kathy said, pulling her laptop open.

"Nah, I get my thing, you get yours," Dante said easily.

"But Dante," Kathy said with a filthy little smile, "I like it best when I get your thing, too."

"That comes after," Dante said, snickering. "But nice one."

"Oh sure, you appreciate the low-hanging fruit jokes, but the really good ones, it's all crickets," Kathy said, sticking out her tongue while she scooped more ice cream.

"Maybe you just don't know your audience," Dante said, poking her in the leg.

"Fine, dick jokes for Dante and I'll save the literary references for..."

Shit. Who would get them? Ezra, maybe? He read more than he let on.
