All the lights were on in the house, chasing away the settling dusk. It made the house look warm and homey, a golden glow pouring out of every window. For the first time since she'd arrived back on Fandom, Kathy felt like she wanted to cook, just bibimbap, simple and easy, but delicious and easy and friendly. Spices scented the air, smelling like home.

A nice place to come and visit, perhaps.

"There's a theme song?" Dante asked, eyes comically big. "Tell me about the theme song."

"Why Dante, I would love to," Sarah said as Kathy groaned. "So, once upon a time, there was this ancient cartoon from, like, the 70s. Maybe even the 60s. It was called Puff the Magic Dragon and it's just about as drug-trippy as it sounds."

"It's a wholesome kid's show!"

"Anyway," Sarah continued, like that outburst hadn't even happened, "our toker friend Puff lives on a magic island called Honalee. Or, as we sing it in our house..." She looked expectantly at Dante.

"...Hana Li," Dante filled in obediently. And snickered.

"That's Kathy's middle and last name," Sarah said in a stage whisper for Eva's benefit. "It's her favorite song."

"Is that true, Kathy?" Dante asked, grinning brightly. "Is it your favorite song?"

"Eva, could you maybe turn around?" Kathy asked. "You shouldn't be witness to the shocking violence I'm about to enact here."

"She's just mad you didn't know this before, Dante," Sarah stage whispered. "A good boyfriend always knows his girl's favorite song."

"Girls," Eva called. "And Dante. Be nice, please, or I'm going to have to drag you all out back by the ear."

"See look," Sarah said, sticking her tongue out at Kathy. "Now you got us in trouble. "

"Good," Kathy retorted, bringing over the pan of eggs and the pan of bulgolgi to the table and putting them on trivets. She was back to hardcore vegetarianism but nobody else needed to suffer. "Dante needs to be dragged around by his ear more often. And grounded. Dante definitely needs more groundings."

"Mom's not going to ground me," Dante piped up. "It's just a weekend, and I'm being good."

"That remains to be seen," Eva said wryly. "You were always the one getting Vergil in trouble..."

That brief look that passed over Dante's face was just a trick of the light, really. "And out of it," he argued, quieter.

Kathy didn't say anything, but her hand slipped onto the small of his back for just a moment as she moved around the table, prepping everyone's bowls.

Dante pushed the feeling away, and he joined his mother in sitting down at the table, waiting for the food to come.

Sarah sat down next to Dante and looked at the separate pan of bulgolgi curiously. "Why didn't you just combine that with the rest of the bibimbap?" she asked.

Kathy was setting down a bowl in front of Eva and hesitated, just for a fraction of a moment. "I'm vegetarian now," she said, striving to sound casual about it. "But I'm not going to deny anyone else."

"She decided she likes cows too much to eat them," Dante said, trying to lighten the subject. "Freak."

"I once saw her eat two and a half pounds of beef after a gymnastics meet once!" Sarah protested.

"Well, now it's more bulgolgi for you," Kathy said, bringing over more bowls to set in front of Dante and Sarah. "If you can manage to get any before Dante eats it all, anyway. Maybe I just got tired of having to fight for my fair share of dinner with two guys in the house."

"There was a cow farm involved," Dante stage-whispered.

"What happened at the cow farm?" Sarah asked. She couldn't make up her mind if she believed this or just wanted to see how much bullshit he could spin.

"Turns out cows are cuddly," Dante said. "... Or at least super curious in a way you could misinterpret as cuddly."

"Wait, really?" Sarah asked, eyes wide. She looked at Kathy for confirmation.

"They're kinda like dogs sometimes," Kathy said, which was true at least. "They'll follow you around to see what you're up to. Sometimes they'll even push in to watch you real close."
