Apartment Above Luke's, Thursday Afternoon

Kathy was sitting crosslegged in her living room, surrounded by a truly staggering number of anatomically-shaped lollipops, hard candies, and other confections. It turned out that the company that had supplied Dite's with chocolates and candy had gone out of business and multiple other companies had sent samples to the store in hopes of scoring the contract. Kathy...wasn't sure what it said about the store or the island that it was considered a lucrative enough market for a number of stores to go to this much trouble.

But, she was determined to be a good manager and if that meant spending the afternoon trying a ridiculous amount of sexy candy to decide which she liked best, well, she was up to the task. As long as she took breaks for real food every few hours, she should be okay, right? And she had a pen and paper to record her observations (and had come up with several criteria to judge them on), making this all legit and aboveboard and not just an excuse to gorge out on penis-shaped candy all day.

So far, she'd noticed that the sour gummy boobs made the cut on her lip burn and the mold for one of the companies tended to make their chocolates look more like melted candles than anything sexy. Oh, and another company used cheap chocolate that tended to flake off which was just NOT attractive in something meant to simulate body parts. It was this kind of attention to detail that separated the good managers from the mediocre, see?

"His was darker," Kathy retorted, reaching for the juice because it was still afternoon, dammit. "Closer to Ezra's."

"This is starting to get disturbing now," Dante decided.

Still grinning, mind you.

"Only because you keep assuming that these stories were about you," Kathy told him. "You're so vain...you probably think this fic is about you..."

"Not sure I'm going to take smack from a girl surrounded by fake tits," Dante said.

Okay, the thing he threw at her wasn't a tit, but still.

Kathy's hand blurred, snapping the candy out of the air and popping it into her mouth with a smug grin.

"And I'm not going to listen to a guy who doesn't know tits from dicks."

"Hey, they're both things you suck on, right?"

Dante.

"Well, I don't," Kathy reminded. "Though if your Isabela plan goes through, who knows?"

"Hey, some dudes have tits too," Dante said, kicking out gently at her.

Kathy looked taken aback for a moment and then lit up. "You're right," she told him, eyes shining. "My bad. Good call."

"That is so the easiest I have ever seen you back down," Dante said, laughing.

"That's because that's one of the first times you've been right when we bickered," she told him. "Unlike some people, I can admit when I'm wrong."

"Suuuure," Dante said. He drank down a mouthful of vodka. "You been getting laid?"

...okay maybe there'd been too much vodka.

That was nearly a spit take. As it was, Kathy inhaled some vodka, coughing as it burned its way down her throat.

"By who?" she croaked, scrubbing her wrist over her mouth. "Ezra can barely look at me, you're not looking at me that way, and Anders and I are the definition of 'it's complicated' on Facebook. And everyone in town is way older than I am, except Sparkle and he's Sparkle."

She needed more vodka for this. She refilled her glass, adding only enough juice to color it. "And I'm not yet brazen enough to bang perfect strangers out in Baltimore yet."

Dante shrugged. "Hey, I don't know where you're at with everyone," he said.

"No, but you and Anders are the far most likely people I'd be sleeping with," she pointed out with a Totally Casual Shrug. "And you'd know if I were sleeping with either of you."

"I don't know," Dante said, shrugging. Again. "Told Anders it's his call."

"Like Anders wouldn't tell you," Kathy snorted, turning away because sorting candy was absolutely a priority right then. "Besides, I haven't seen him since you got back."

"He doesn't have to if he doesn't want to," Dante said. At least this time the shrug was constrained to his voice. "And really? Huh."

"Of course he doesn't have to," Kathy said, looking up at him to roll her eyes. "He wants to. He really cares about you and he shares stuff with people he cares about."

Which Dante knew already. Obviously.

"Now you're making it sound all sentimental and shit," Dante said, pulling a face.

And quickly moving to get a swig of his drink.

Kathy was not going to mention that it absolutely was sentimental. Or that Anders was sentimental. Again, he knew all that already.

"Well, god forbid it sounds sentimental," she drawled. "I'm sure it's all very platonic bro-caring. You'll both be popping collars and wearing puka shell necklaces any minute now."

"High-fives and booze," Dante announced. "... And getting laid. But that's it."

Sure.

Kathy couldn't help her disbelieving snort. No one could have, it was impossible. And that was without knowing about the 'I love you.'

"Sure," she said because she wasn't going to argue with him about it. Especially if everything was working between them because Dante was cheerfully ignoring it. "Doesn't stop Anders from liking to talk."

"... I'll give you that one," Dante allowed. He sank back into his seat with his drink. "You should be getting laid."

Come rain or shine, Dante Sparda would believe in the power of sex.

"You're probably right," Kathy agreed, tossing some more of the strawberry-scented candies at him. "But I don't tend to fuck strangers, remember? May eventually revisit that possibility, but for now, I draw the line at medium petting."
