Three ringing tones are heard before an automated message picks up. "We're sorry, your call cannot be completed at this time. All circuits are busy at this time. We are requesting all non-urgent calls be put on hold to keep the lines clear for emergency services. Thank you for your cooperation as we work to get the lines cleared." The tone plays again and the message is repeated three more times before the line automatically disconnects.
Very rarely, a call manages to get through and a message can be left.
*There are several clicks, as if an attempt at connection is being made, but then there's only silence and hissing on the line until, eventually, the phone disconnects.*

"I'm worried about him. He's lost a lot of people, you know? And I can't... I don't wanna die, I swear it might've sounded like that sometimes, but I don't. I'd much rather kill all of these fuckers so they'll leave me alone."
A beat.
"I just don't know how. Don't think I can. Don't think anyone can. But I can't just-- fuck, I don't know. I'm all inside-out."
A sigh.
"This is still fucking stupid, by the way."

"Don't know why I'm trying to justify myself to a fucking dead answering machine." No, seriously. "Loads of newbies. Some of them are cool. You know how it goes. Got hit with a fire drill in the middle of some jello rain, but that's the worst of it for them so far."
A longer, slower pause. Dante sucked in a breath.
"I wish the answering machine still had your message on it," he said. "Don't know if that's less or more sad."
