From the Prom to Baltimore, Friday Night
Apr. 10th, 2015 08:49 pmKathy was had been at the prom for maybe half an hour before her phone rang; just enough time for her to have a few conversations and a quick trip to the refreshment table (or four). She was frowning when she felt it vibrating in her clutch, trying to think who it could be. If it was her parents, she decided, she was just going to ignore it and tell them later she was studying.
Imagine her surprise when the name that flashed across her screen was Gorgon. Actually, forget surprise. Imagine her concern.
"Hey," she said, setting her cup of punch on the closest table and ducking for the door. "Gorgon, it's Banzai. Did you mean to call me? Is everything okay?"
[For the caller, please!]

Date: 2015-04-11 01:50 am (UTC)Shoving her phone into her clutch and her clutch into her dufflebag, she took off towards the Causeway. Yeah, she'd probably get there slightly faster if she changed into her Banzai gear first, but...it was prom, dammit. She was going to wear her prom dress for as long as she could.
Closer to eight minutes later, Kathy strolled into the McDonalds, looking for the guy in the leather duster and mirrored shades.

Date: 2015-04-11 02:48 am (UTC)Honestly, as much fun as she'd been having, she was kinda happier right here.

Date: 2015-04-11 03:02 am (UTC)"My hero," Kathy said, dimpling at him. "That just means I'm going to add a McFlurry and an extra triple cheeseburger to my order."

Date: 2015-04-11 03:19 am (UTC)Of course, the cashier was going to think all the food was going to him. They generally did. And then he laughed at them, on the inside. Little did they know.

Date: 2015-04-11 12:20 pm (UTC)She was a superhero, Nick, she wouldn't do you like that!
At the register, she ordered for both of them, hiding a smile as the cashier starting giving Nick weird looks about the time she got to the third item, and handed over his card to pay for it all. The sodas she filled up herself, bringing Nick over a cup almost as big as her head, brimming with regular soda, as ordered.
"Thank you for dinner, Hollywood," Kathy said sincerely, handing it over. "We're order 38, the rest of it's going to take a bit. So, what's got you on the East Coast? Besides me not doing my job, I mean."

Date: 2015-04-11 12:33 pm (UTC)It didn't seem to be coming apart at the seams, at least. That was a good sign.

Date: 2015-04-11 12:45 pm (UTC)"Oooh, fancy," Kathy said, eyes bright. "You sure no one's gonna need you to hold their hand later? Or their hair? Cause, so help me, you bail on me in the middle of a fight to go baby-sit a grown adult...!"

Date: 2015-04-11 03:36 pm (UTC)Really, they probably needed babysitting more than Kathy did, anyway.

Date: 2015-04-11 03:44 pm (UTC)Or holding someone's hand. Or even--sigh--their hair.
"I see how it is," she said, laughing. "You decide to walk the carpet by yourself, but as soon as you want to tangle with drunks and dealers, then it's 'let's call Kathy, see what she's up to.' Feeling the love here."
Was she happy he called to tangle with drunks and dealers? Oh hell yeah.

Date: 2015-04-11 05:03 pm (UTC)But then, he didn't have his bike with him, so maybe it was a toss-up?

Date: 2015-04-11 05:10 pm (UTC)"But if you called her, you wouldn't be getting such weird looks from the McD's staff right now," Kathy said, getting up to fetch their meals. "And what a loss that would be!"

Date: 2015-04-11 05:40 pm (UTC)A bit of lighthearted teasing, right there.

Date: 2015-04-11 06:17 pm (UTC)Their meal took two trips, since even with overloading the tray there wasn't enough room for all the food that Kathy had ordered, but eventually she was back to their table and proceeding to steadily demolish her burgers, much to the consternation of everyone watching.
God, it was like they'd never seen a hungry girl before.
"You know what? I just realized that I am miffed at you," she said, shaking a fry at Nick. "You came all the way out here and called me, but do you know what you didn't bring? Pickles."
Tragedy.

Date: 2015-04-11 06:31 pm (UTC)"You think I could've gotten Mona's pickles all the way across the country without having to share? Kathy, baby, I'm hurt. You know I wouldn't have left you without if I had a choice. Anyway, work's been stupid. Some stupid Canadian fiance minister cut their tax credit, and yesterday and most of today have been spent reassuring some of my actors that if the projects get dumped because the studios can't afford to pay the fucking cameramen, I'll do my damnedest to keep them in work somewhere else."
Get your own pickles, Kathy. Nikolai had needed his this week.

Date: 2015-04-11 06:51 pm (UTC)Yeah, she followed Snoop Dogg. What?
"I didn't realize that it would impact anyone in LA, though."

Date: 2015-04-11 07:02 pm (UTC)"Damn," Kathy said quietly, shaking her head. She shoved a few fries his way. "Sorry about giving you a hard time. You know I didn't actually expect you to carry pickles over three thousand miles for me, right?"
Or even to call, just because he was in town.
