Room 508, Thursday Afternoon

So...prom was tomorrow. And almost the entire contents of Kathy's wardrobe was strewn about her side of the room, as she tried to find something--anything--that she could wear and still look Ms. Adler in the eye if she were there to chaperone. Even knowing that most of this stuff hadn't started off as her wouldn't make up for actually wearing it. In public. Where people could see.

She knew she ought to be more grateful. Most of the clothes in her closet came from her neighbors who had wanted to make sure that she'd have plenty of clothing when she went away to school. And nobody in her neighborhood was rich, so handmedowns were the best most people could do. But...still... There was a reason that sometimes she dressed like someone out of the late seventies. It wasn't her aesthetic. It was just what was in her closet, especially when it had been awhile since she'd done laundry.

But even sternly reminding herself to be grateful wasn't helping her prom dilemma any. Not when she was staring at someone's weird obsession with short skirts and detachable trains. In various colors. Because that was a thing she needed, yes.

She should have taken Ms. Adler up on her offer of ordering a gown from class on Tuesday. Or maybe she should just try fashioning something out of her curtains and a flat sheet. It couldn't be any worse than some of her other options, after all.

Dammit, she really missed Minako. Between her and Sparkle, they could have salvaged something out of this wreck of fabric. And even if they couldn't...well, she still missed Minako.

Ah well. Once more into the sartorial mines. Maybe she'd missed something? No not that.

"For the same reason I used to wish mine were," Kathy said softly. "Heck of a lot easier."

She paused, then offered, "Hey, just to let you know that I'm cool however you choose to look, but we're cool whether you're white or blue or whatever. Except maybe if you look like me. That was just weird."

Raven laughed. "That's fair. Most people tend to stare pretty hard when I do that. But most people also aren't going to immediately hit someone who looks just like them, so. . . ."

Mostly, she did it because of the faces people made. Let's be honest.

"Now I kinda want to see you do it to Ronan," Kathy admitted. "Just to see if you could surprise him out of his perpetual bad mood or something."

Kathy, stop being a bad person.

"He looked like he was about to pop a vein and threatened me to never do it again," Raven said. "And I think I confused his bird."

"He has a bird?" That just seemed so bizarre, compared to the 'I don't give a damn about anything' air he had.

Raven nodded. "Her name is Chainsaw, and she's much nicer than he is. Though, admittedly, I'm a little biased." She smiled a little ruefully. "She's a raven."

Kathy grinned. "I bet that would be true even if you weren't biased. So long as someone's not being actively nasty, they're probably nicer than Ronan."

Raven snorted. "What's he even so angry about? I think he just likes to complain."

"Well, Raven, look at his life," Kathy said dryly. "Imagine how hard it is being him."

"Oooo, you're right," Raven said. "I mean, there's nowhere for him to race his car on this island at all."

"Some days, he even has to go to class." Kathy was filled with immense sympathy, really.

"Possibly as often as maybe once or twice a day," Raven said. "And then I bet he occasionally has some homework to not do."

"I'm starting to feel really bad for him," Kathy said with a sniffle. "I mean, his meals aren't even catered."

"Well, that's his own fault," Raven said. "I'm sure one of the many fine eating establishments would love to cater his meals."

"But then he'd have to call one of them. And talk to them. And that's a lot to ask!"

Conversing with peons? Ronan was so much better than that.

"True. And I bet his roommate is totally unwilling to do it for him."

"Or clean up after him."

"Completely unfair."

"How could the school allow something like this to even happen? How could anyone?"

In honesty, this might be the meanest Kathy had ever deliberately been about someone in her life, Fandom-weird notwithstanding.

Raven was clearly being a bad influence. She had no trouble being this mean. "It's a downright tragedy. There ought to be a relief effort."

"We could try to put something together?" Kathy suggested. "Text 5555 to donate $10 to the 'Buy Ronan A Personality Fund'?"

"2 cents of every dollar goes directly to buying feed for his raven."

"And the other 98 cents goes goes directly to the downpayment on his new personality upgrade," Kathy assured her. "No overhead or transaction fees. Please give generously."

"How much do you suppose personalities go for these days?" Raven asked. "I'm terrible at working out sixty years of inflation."

"Ohhh, they got expensive after the yuppie crash of the 1980s," Kathy said sadly. "Reaganomics were a difficult time for everyone. We are looking in the high 5 digits or so. I mean, at least for someone like him."
