Apocalypse Ave, Friday Afternoon

The door to 33 Apocalypse was almost in sight when Kathy realized that she'd forgotten her phone back at The Perk. She must have left it on the counter while grabbing a bunch of 'thank you for coming to help me move' strawberry creams to bring back for everyone. And then she'd been having so much fun chatting with Ezra and Dante that she'd never thought to bring it back.
She blamed the patriarchy for her lack of phone-sized pockets, dammit.
"Hey guys," she said, drawing to a halt a few yards from the door. "I left my phone back at The Perk like an idiot. I'm just gonna run and grab it, okay?"

Dante |
Dante grinned at her. "Fine," he said, "Don't like, drag it out like you always do. So fuckin' slow." |
Ezra |
"Try not to get distracted by anything shiny on the way, either." Ez. That only applied to you. |
Kathy |
Kathy huffed at them, hands on her hips. "You two are hilarious," she informed them, as if she wasn't already grinning. "At least I know you'll both be entertained until I get back. Maybe you could even bestir yourselves to move a few boxes while I'm gone?" she teased, before setting off into a run back down the street. |
Dante |
Dante made an amused noise, shaking his head. "Sometimes I think she just likes showing off," he said. Like you didn't. |
Ezra |
"Yes, darling, that is a completely fair barb to throw around in this company." Which was to say, it wasn't. They were a trio of show-offs. |
Kathy |
It's true, but surely they could all be excused considering how pretty they all were when they were showing off? Kathy followed Apocalypse down towards the park, shifting into an easy lope that she could keep up for ages if she needed to. Her muscles loosened and warmed as she fell into the ground-devouring stride, reminding her that, at some point, she had been physically made for this. It was a good feeling, one that had her grinning as she passed Leprechaun mere moments after she left the guys behind. One foot hit the pavement as the scenery to her right turned to the green of the park. Then another and another and - Light. Her smile vanished as a column of white light blazed up around her, lifting her a foot or so in the air and held her fast. |
Dante |
Dante was in the middle of rolling his eyes merrily when he caught the light from the corner of his eye. His head turned abruptly. "The fuck--?" |
Ezra |
Ezra turned. Then, immediately after, he broke into a run. Look, strange columns of light weren't always a bad thing, but for all that he kept a lazily cheerful exterior, Ezra didn't actually trust the World that much. |
Kathy |
What? That's what Kathy had meant to say. But she couldn't speak - at least, no words came out. She mouthed the word, expression turning frantic as she realized she couldn't move, either. There was nothing to push against, it was like trying to run through the ocean or in the vacuum of space. Her movements got even more frantic as she realized just how trapped she was, fists coming up to bang on nothing at all, but unable to pass beyond the wall of light surrounding her on every side. Help me! |
Dante |
Dante snapped out of his confusion half a second after Ezra did, taking off at a break-neck pace. "Kathy!" No no no what the fuck. |
Ezra |
At least she was easy to find? Although it wasn't much of a silver lining. Ezra rounded a corner, frantically - and there it was, up ahead. The column of light. And inside it, Kathy. "What the fuck?!" |
Kathy |
Kathy continued to slam against the wall of light, eyes wide and filled with panic. Her mouth was still open, no longer making words, just a soundless scream. And then the light got brighter and brighter still, until she was nothing more than a silhouette inside the column. The light intensified until it was almost incandescent, making it impossible to look at directly. The column stayed that way for five long seconds, light pressing against their faces with enough force to be palpable - and then it vanished. The only thing that remained behind were spots dancing in their eyes, a rain of fine ash, and a strange pattern burned into the pavement below. Kathy was gone. |
