33 Apocalypse Ave, Wednesday Morning

By the kindness of fate--or perhaps the influence of Fandom--Kathy had treated herself to a long bath and a book the night before, ending up falling asleep in her own room mere pages from the end up the book. This bit of unexpected luck allowed the Kathy that woke up the following morning to have at least a little while before she was unexpectedly traumatized. At thirteen and still several years before attending Fandom or developing superpowers, this Kathy was a little less trained to roll with the punches.

But for now, she got washed up and dressed, then headed downstairs to make herself a bowl of cereal and some toast before figuring out what to do with the day.

And wow. That was a lot of booze and leftover pizza to shove into one fridge. Huh.

"I don't, I just want you to have a good time while you're here," Dante said, nodding towards the door.

"Thank you," Kathy said, scampering towards the door. "I promise, I'll try really hard to have fun this week!"

She wasn't sure why he cared about that so much, but she appreciated that he did.

"Not too hard," Dante said, following after her. "Like, that would beat the point of fun."

He really needed to get Raven's notes for dealing with her, like the time she'd asked if she'd be graded on how well she did nothing.

"But I don't wanna get it wrong!"

No, she did not see anything weird about that statement.

"There's no getting it wrong unless you're not enjoying it," Dante said, repressing a big sigh as he followed her out the door.

Kathy shook her head, eyes solemn. "There's always a wrong answer, even if you don't know you're choosing it."

"Nope," Dante said, "That's bullshit."

Kathy shook her head. "No, it's really, really true," she insisted. "I mean, maybe not for you because you're grown and a boy and, umm..." She decided not to say 'white' "...but it is for me."

"Nope," Dante repeated. "There's people who want you to think like that, 'cause it's easier for them. But the truth is, nope."

"Is there a difference if I have to listen to them?" Kathy asked, head tilting to the side as she listened to him.

"Yeah," Dante said, tossing her an easy smile. "Because it means you can do whatever the fuck you want when they're not in earshot."

"But what if I don't know," Kathy asked in a small voice. "It's like bringing someone who's never had ice cream straight to Baskin Robbins!"

"Well, what would you do if that happened to you?" Dante said. "Pick shit at random that sounds good."

"No," Kathy said thoughtfully. "I'd make a list of all the flavors and then cross off any that had stuff I didn't like in them, and then ask to try the rest and rank them in order of how much I liked them."

Dante shrugged, gesturing with one hand. "Or do that," he said. "Whatever works for you."

Kathy blinked at him, clearly expecting to be told that there was something wrong with her method, then gave him a tentative grin. "But once I got my list ready, I'd start at random of the ones I thought I might like," she confessed, a little shy.

"Smart way to do it," Dante said. "You wind up eating less shit."

"I don't think they're making that into an ice cream flavor yet," Kathy deadpanned.

"Aw, kid," Dante said, grinning. "The world's gonna disappoint you so much."

"That flavor's going on the 'No Thanks' section of the list," Kathy declared.
