33 Apocalypse Ave, Sunday Afternoon

From the minute the calendar had flipped from November to December, Kathy had been getting ready for the holidays. Quite literally--at midnight exactly she'd hung up the first decoration over her bed so she could fall asleep under it. By the tenth day of December, the public spaces in 33 apocalypse were starting to resemble a gingerbread house, lacking only a Christmas tree to hit maximum Christmas spirit.

So it was entirely possible that when the magic strings of Christmas lights appeared (in very unusual places, like inside closets and around the fridge and festively illuminating the shower since most other places already had strings of lights put up), it was entirely possible that it would have shorted the power even without the island's impetus behind it. Kathy tried flipping the breakers three times before just giving up and lighting a bunch of candles instead.

Though she'd just finished mixing up a batch of cookie dough which required an oven to bake. Maybe one last attempt to get the power working before giving up on electricity entirely?

"I finally decide to come hang out at home and the power goes out right in the middle of my shows." Hello to you, too, Raven.

"Not my fault!" Kathy said immediately.

Beat.

"...Probably?"

Raven raised an eyebrow at her with a small smirk. "I mean, I don't want to tell you how to celebrate the season, but maybe you could have left off the lights in the bathroom?"

"Those were definitely not mine," Kathy said. "I think it's today's weird Fandom thing. They keep knocking the power out, too. There's a strand around the fridge that's really annoying because I have to unwind it every time I need milk or eggs or something for these cookies."

"Maybe it was anticipating the power going out," Raven said. "It's trying to keep the cold in."

"The power wouldn't be going out if they weren't overloading the breakers," Kathy grumbled, heading into the loving room to flop down next to Raven in front of the blank TV. "What were you watching?"

"That's not important." The same Doctor Sexy episodes she'd already rewatched several times. "Maybe we should switch to solar powered electronics."

"A couple of solar panels probably wouldn't hurt, yeah," Kathy said, pondering it. "I mean, magic lights-induced power outages aside, enough random stuff happens over the year to make it worthwhile anyway."

"We'll probably increase our chances of ending up in a world with no sun, but for the most part, no downside." Raven reached over to try and snag a bit of raw cookie dough. "Plus, I bet you can get Mr. Spencer to install it for us."

Kathy nodded. She wouldn't mind making their house a little more apocalypse-proof. You know, for random, non-apocalypse reasons. The...resale value or whatever. "Probably. Though I'm wondering if that's maybe a spring project? Or at least not a random-things-fall-from-the-sky-month project."

“This is Fandom. Random things might fall from the sky any month.” Raven tilted her head thoughtfully. “Admittedly it is slightly more likely in December.”

"Is that the real reason you came home?" Kathy teased. "Didn't want to be outside in the next rain of eggnog or cotton candy storm?"

"It's sticky," Raven said with a pout. Because yes, that was in fact a big reason why she'd come back home. "Also, the alots looked creepy in those hats."

[spin_kick_snap]

"...Tell me there wasn't an alot of heads," Kathy said, suddenly picturing it and shuddering. "Why did I do that to myself? That's an image that's going to linger."

"There's an alot of everything," Raven said, in the tone of one who had seen too much. "Anyway. Cookies!"

Suddenly there were other alots that Kathy was imagining, like something out of the creepiest hentai movie ever and was laughing and crying "Ew! Ew!" at the same time.

"Yes! Cookies! I was making gingerbread, but the chocolate chip dough is probably chilled enough we can take it out of the fridge!"

And just eat it unbaked because, fuck you, they were grownups.

"Ooo, nice!" Raven reached to snag another little bit of the gingerbread. "To eat, right? It's not like the oven's working."

"Well, yeah," Kathy said. "I mean, it's that or admire it and, while I make a damn good cookie dough, it's not that entertaining. And...hang on a sec."

She dashed to her room, snagging her phone and laptop, and then back to the kitchen for the bowl of dough.

"Who's your best friend on the entire planet?" she asked proudly, as she strode back into the living room, juggling cookie dough and electronics.

"On this planet, orrrr. . . ." Raven teased. "Girlie blackout movie time?"

"Doesn't matter, the answer is the same on every planet!" Kathy informed her. "And yes! Though I can also set up my phone to be a mobile hot spot, which means if you'd rather keep watching Doctor Sexy--" she knew you, Raven "--we can do that instead."

She set the dough down on the table, carefully avoiding the big cinnamon-scented pillar candle that was currently providing their light and the decorative runner it was sitting on. "Movies, refreshments, and bestie bonding time."

"The ridiculous sexual misadventures of medical interns will still be there when the power comes back on," Raven decided. "And, like, forever after. I hear the new season just got yet another fresh batch of interns. That show will never die." And she loved it. "Bestie bonding time sounds great to me."

"Oooh, I'll have to catch up then. I stopped watching after the episode where the hot blonde nurse was diagnosed with lupus and his girlfriend died when her car went over the pier, remember that one?"

This show was so ridiculous.

"So what should we watch instead? We got a bunch of movies I downloaded in a totally legal fashion, including pretty much every movie to ever make it onto a holiday movie list. Which includes Slay Hard--Eliot loves that movie--and the third Ferrite Man flick."

"Oh man, that was forever ago. Now his sister is getting a brain tumor removed that's probably been compromising her ability to make rational decisions for her entire career as a neurosurgeon. You haven't even gotten as far as the bus crashing into the emergency room yet."

The ridiculousness was what made it so compelling.

"They'll count anything that takes place in December as a holiday movie, won't they." Raven shook her head. "Let's skip the superhero movies. They're too unrealistic." Though Kathy referencing them so casually was nice to see. "How about one where monsters chase teenagers around in the snow?"

Holiday horror movies were awesome.

Kathy had loved the Revengers movies long before she died, she even still had a pair of leggings with images from the comics. She would be damned if she let her own stupidity take that from her.

Not that she'd watched any of the movies since they'd come back, but she was clinging to that.

"Oooh, I think there's a whole series about angry snowmen who kill!"

"Angry snowmen, huh? I'm in." Raven went to the fridge to start untangling the lights so they could grab their snacks and beverages. "What are they angry about, do you think?"
