So. The island could turn her back into an ex at literally any moment. That was not a thought that was good for Kathy's peace of mind. Being an ex again, for however short a time, had not been good for Kathy's peace of mind. She hadn't been a mindless husk that had seen everything that moved as 'prey,' no, but that was cold comfort when she had spent the day eating brains.

Hunting small creatures to get--

Her stomach lurched again, just thinking about it. She hadn't eat much this past week just for that reason. It felt like February all over again, when eating had been a struggle, the very act bringing up memories she didn't want to relive.

Distantly, Kathy knew she should go home, deal with the mess left in her room, deal with the mess that was her life. And she would! She just--couldn't yet. Not while she still felt like this, ten pounds of crazy in a four pound bag. She just needed to get a handle on it--was trying to get a handle on it--and when she did, she'd go home. She'd apologize for worrying everyone, she'd clean up, she'd be okay.

Soon. Just not now.

"Make me some of your awesome cupcakes in the morning," Dante decided, lips close to her ears. "Mmm, strawberries."

Kathy burst out laughing at that answer. "That's a whole lot of time and effort spent being nice to you!" she declared.

She would though. Maybe even before he woke up so he could be surprised by cupcakes for breakfast. He deserved a few dozen by this point, honestly.

Dante batted his eyes up at her. "But worth it."

Ugh and she was, like, compelled to lean down and kiss his stupid face. She had a serious problem here.

"If you say so," she grumbled.

"You know it," Dante said, kissing her cheek a moment after.

"Nobody ever bakes me cupcakes," she noted, trying hard to cling to her grumpy expression.

"I buy you pizza," Dante pointed out.

"That's true," Kathy acknowledged with a smile. "Though I've been baking you cupcakes for years."

Hadn't it started with a bet or something? She was too drowsy to remember, but there had definitely been a reason she'd started baking him cupcakes.

"So you knew a good idea when you saw one," Dante said easily. "Keep it up, I say."

"I wonder if that tequila would be at all salvageable if I mixed it in with frosting," Kathy said, turning the idea over in her mind. "Like a strawberry margarita cake. Hmmm."

Combining booze and strawberries into a dessert was kind of like peak Dante catnip.

"See," Dante said, and yawned. "This is why you're my favorite girlfriend."

"The fact that I'm your only girlfriend has nothing to do with it," Kathy said, nodding solemnly. "It's okay. Most of the time you're my favorite Nephilim boyfriend, too."

"Well, you're my only girlfriend for a reason," Dante countered reasonably.

"Didn't I say that you'd one day end up involved with a baker?" Kathy said, cracking up. "I totally called that, like, two years ago. See? I always knew you!"

"Start a cupcake and pizza joint in the back of the sex shop, I'll never leave," Dante decided.

"With a mic and a stage up front so you can play your guitar for people whenever you want," Kathy said. "Well, now I know how to create the perfect Dante trap in case I ever need one."

Dante snickered. "Deciding it's my turn to be the sex hobo?"

"I mean, we might wanna switch it up a little, you know?" Kathy teased. "Especially if I end up going all 9-to-5 on you or something."

"Mm, so what'd you do to me?"

Dante was starting to sound sleepy. But also interested.

Sleepy was gonna win, but he wanted to ride it out as far as he could.

"What, in my pizza/bakery/sex shop?" Kathy asked. "You'd obviously be my preferred test subject. Every new pizza, new baked good, and new sex toy would be tested on you first. Thoroughly."

"Just make sure you point 'em at the right holes," Dante joked.

"Hey, you look pretty with a cock in your mouth, even if it's made of silicon," Kathy said, and that wasn't a joke, even if it was said with humor. "But, c'mon. I know the fastest way to get you to break up with me--" She yawned "--is to waste good pizza."

"At least you finally get it," Dante said, shutting his eyes. "Think it'll be dark out when we wake up?"

"What, how seriously you take your pizza?" Kathy let out a sleepy laugh. "Dante, I knew that like five minutes after meeting you." She let her head droop, resting her cheek against his hair. "And probably. S'already getting on towards dusk. The stars'll be out by the time we get up."

By habit, she brushed her fingers over her new tattoo and then pressed a kiss to his head.

"Maybe we'll go looking at those," Dante mumbled.

Then he fell silent.

Or rather, asleep, arm still slung around Kathy.
