"Dante," Kathy said, her tone waspish with exasperation, "I don't even know what you mean when you call me your girlfriend, okay?" She moved her arm just enough to glare up at him with one baleful eye. "I know it's something you never asked for and something you never wanted, so of course I'm trying to be a good one so it's not like a--a--an imposition!" Not the right word, but a better one wasn't leaping at her.
"But even if we were just friends, or roommates, or two people who just happened to be dating the same guy, I'd still be this way. I--I care about you." Her voice cracked. "I want to make you happy. I want to get you. I want to be easy. It doesn't matter whether we're banging or there are titles being bandied around or anything like that. I want your heart to lighten when I'm around, because I'm around."
She was tired of being a millstone around the neck of the people she cared about, the kind of person who took effort and energy to be near.
