It had been ten days since the kids had left and Kathy was mostly back to normal. The fact that it was the end of the semester had probably helped a bit in that regard - it was possible to be maudlin and to study your ass off, but it took a lot more energy than Kathy really had to spare.

Her immediate plans for the evening - more studying, finals started on Monday - had been immediately derailed when Dante had declared it a night off, carrying her downstairs to a pillow pile, made from what looked to be every pillow in the damn house. As if that wasn't dirty enough, he plied her with a mixing bowl full of ice cream, whipped cream, and caramel sauce, a similar-sized sundae for him on the other side of the nest.

Ice cream, blankets, pillows, and boyfriend. The perfect recipe to get rid of post-kid and pre-finals blues.

"Not soppy?" Kathy teased. "I used to get accused of being soppy all the time."

"Yeah, but not usually with your hands all over me," Dante teased gently.

"Mmmhmm," Kathy teased, bending over so her lips brushed against his spine. "I must be misremembering."

A flash of teeth, a flare of pain, and then Kathy was back to drawing, just as sweet as you please.

Dante gasped softly, dropping his forehead onto the pillow in front of him.

"Not fair."

"Stay still," Kathy chided, like it wasn't her fault. "You don't wanna mess me up, do you?"

"I don't even know what you're drawing," Dante protested, laughing softly.

"Wings for now," Kathy said, adding quick lines with her marker to indicate feathers. "And probably a sword down your spine."

"Going pretty literal, huh?" Dante teased. "Mm. Kinda, anyway."

"Leave me and my wingkink alone," Kathy said serenely.

Although....hmmm. What if instead of a sword, it was a tail...from the dragon she could draw on his front...

Dante snickered softly. "Sorry I haven't like, spouted the classic feathery ones."

"The ones you had in Hell were hot, too," Kathy said absently.

Then paused. "Err..."

Was it okay to say that?

Dante blinked.

Then snorted.

"Got a thing for demon wings you didn't tell me about, Kat?"

"Err...well...that is..." Oh god, she was blushing and this was so dumb.

Dante blinked.

Then let out a soft laugh. "Holy shit, you do."

"I mean--" Kathy said, flailing helplessly. "Just shut up!"

There. That'd keep him quiet.

"Sorry I don't have feathers?" Dante laughed.

"You don't have to be," Kathy said softly. "The only reason I'm going with feathers now is because I thought you might get tired of anyone only ever acknowledging one side of your heritage."

"Aw," Dante said, his laughter fading into a smile. "That's sweet, Kat."

Kathy chuckled. "I mean, I'm pretty sure you think both sides are bullshit," she acknowledged. "But, I mean, you did have two parents. I blame the patriarchy."

Or that they normally dealt with Hell and demons, but she was keeping things light.

"Oh, so this is really some kinda feminist shit with my mom, I get it," Dante said, nodding seriously.

"Hey now," Kathy said, with another quick kiss to his shoulder. "I think wings are sexy enough that I'm not specifically of your mom right now. Just your matrilineal heritage."

Dante chuckled softly. "Okay, okay," he said. "Guess I can't put up a fight against something you think makes me hotter, right?"

He really did think it was sweet.

"That's right," Kathy told him, shading the wings a bit. The feathers were outlined in black, but then she overlaid silver, causing them to shimmer a bit. Row after row to decorate his back from shoulders down to his waist and angling down towards his sides.

One wing done, she grabbed the black again, drawing a sinuous line down his spine. Yep, definitely going for a dragon on the front.

"Does that mean that I should start telling you 'I swear, this will make you hotter' every time I don't want to have an argument?"

Dante chuckled again. The markers were cold against his back, but he liked the attention she was pouring into it; made him aware of every inch of his skin back there.

"I mean, you can try," he said, "But it's gonna start sounding like an insult."

"We'd both know I was lying anyway." The tail drawn, time to start outlining the scales and then filling them in with the metallic gold marker. "Sexy wings aside, I'm not sure I could think of something that could actually make you hotter."
