Overcoming Obstacles - Friday, 1st Period

Today, the classroom had an assortment of suits scattered around for students to grab. Because Tony was Tony and what even was money? How much could a banana cost? Ten dollars? That sort of thing.

"Welcome back, everyone!" Tony said, holding onto a leash tightly as Fee was losing her goddamn mind over the suits. "Today we're jumping right into the deep end."

"Fee and Libby have been trained to take down intruders," Steve said, "because our lives can be a little...extreme. They're still puppies, so they think this is a big fun game and they are definitely not going to hurt you."

"But they will knock you over. Probably." Had they knocked over Tony? He was not going to tell.

"They might also just run right past you and miss entirely," Steve admitted.

"Hence the training!" Tony said. "So, how about everyone suit up and we'll see how this goes."

"It'll be fun!" Steve said enthusiastically, already reaching for his suit. "And we won't video anyone."

This time...

Combat 101, Friday Second Period

"We will begin," Thor told his class without further preamble, "with some basic self-defense. Some of you may be more advanced than this, but it never hurts to review the basics." And some of you seemed to think magic would always save you, so learning how to kick someone in the groin was a step in the right direction. "Pair up, and I shall demonstrate, and then you can practice on one another. Please remember not to actually follow through. You are not simulations, and I do not wish for you to harm one another grievously. Let us begin."

Second floor common room, Friday evening

Having received a thorough grounding in how to use the internet from Arden, Sairis had been making use of it ever since. It was frustrating that he couldn't be sure how much was true, but he'd learned to research and cross-reference texts, and that seemed to help.

He'd learned a lot about electricity! And how stoves worked. He had his priorities.

So here he was, having found some eggs and meat and carrots in the icebox, and cooking them in a pan on the stove. There was a spice rack, and most of them made no sense, so he'd tasted them. Which was why he was using salt and pepper (those he knew) and something called "chili powder" to season it all.

Cupcakes of the World(s), Friday 1/16, Period 3

“This week,” Stark said once everyone had arrived, “I thought we’d start with somewhere I’m not from but sometimes I’m told I sound like I’m from. Sometimes I’m a koala and those are from Australia even if I’m not when I’m my usual self.”

Did you all know your teacher was a koala on occasion? You did now!

“Australia is a country here, on Earth,” Stark said. “In case any of you aren’t aware. I should have brought a map. Next time. We can mark off where we’ve had cupcakes from. Keep track of it.”

He’d try to remember that for next week and the following weeks.

“First off, I have the recipe for today’s cupcakes. They’re lamington cupcakes because lamingtons are a dessert in Australia. This is just that but made into a cupcake. Cake, chocolate, and coconut.”

“So, you have the recipe. We have all the ingredients and equipment you might need. I’ve made frosting already, if anyone wants to use that instead of making their own. But first off we’ll need to make the cupcakes. If you need help, please ask. I’m happy to help. Always.”

Rey's warehouse- Friday afternoon

Rey had felt just enough of a draft this morning that she'd gotten up into the rafters for a little bit of maintenance on the hole they'd patched last year. You know, from when a boulder had gone through it. This was how Rey realized that some things in Fandom sounded weirder more time away you had from them.

If you needed her, you'd have to look up. Way up. And she might ask you to toss her the duct tape from there. Not because she couldn't just levitate it up, or even because she needed it, but because it could be fun.

It was safe to say that Tiny was a little-- confused today. Still, he shuffled out of the way obediently to allow Lucifer to take his seat behind the piano.

"I can't believe the nerve of some people," Lucifer sighed, before launching into a somewhat-irritated rendition of Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now'.

Blackstone Forge & Foundry, Friday

And so it was Friday, and Henry was left back alone to his thoughts at the forge. All right - not entirely alone, as Mutt was there, wandering about and sniffing at things. But still.

It wasn't like it was the first time he'd been alone with his thoughts here, either. He had been quite frequently since returning. But there was a restlessness in him here, with so little actual smithing to do and so much empty time to fill.

"D'you think we should start making more horseshoes, just in case?" he asked Mutt, pitifully, around noon. "I don't know how much longer I want to listen to myself think."

Mutt barked at him enthusiastically.

Good morning, everyone! It's Steve Rogers--

*exuberant barking*

--and Fee, and we're here for the new--don't eat that, Fee. The news. Let's start with classes. Jane and Cara had their class watching a movie with sharks falling from the sky--we had to fix a window because that happened here--Don confused us with magically appearing cows--in the story, not in class--and Liliana led her class in understanding peace through structure. Speaking of structure, the gremlins still had a cardboard castle in the library. That sounds like it could escalate.

In town, Luma is really hoping that the clothing hadn't developed a new, themed habit every week, Vi brought Steph a peppermint mocha, Steven and Watts had lunch, and Thor was back on the Norse cow thing while serving drinks at the Devil's Nest. And Dr. Lecter was holding counseling hours.

*more barking*

Fee, leave Leroy alone. That's everything for the news! Have a good weekend.

Fandom Counseling, Thursday

It was a new semester, and you never knew when someone might actually admit they needed therapy. (Hannibal was an optimist at heart.) Plus, Hannibal had a class to prepare for and multiversal taxes to do.

So here he was, opening his practice and sitting behind his desk at the computer, waiting to see if anybody would drop in.

The glittery flamingos had been well-fed as a bribe to let anyone pass.

Library, Thursday 1/15

The book castle from yesterday was still in the library when Belle arrived. There were gremlins inside it and gremlins patrolling the perimeter as well.

There was also a very large box fort which was occupied by a different group of gremlins.

So far the fighting was limited to taunting. It seemed there was some sort of genre war happening. Belle really didn't want to get involved but she was also impressed with both the book castle arms the box fort and wanted to look at them more closely.

Philosophies of Mana (Extended Edition), Thursday Per 3

When the class opened the doors of the Danger Shop, they were greeted with an idyllic rolling grassland, the air warm with the occasional refreshing breeze scented by the wildflowers growing in profusion by the babbling stream, and even a few goats were wandering or gamboling or whatever goats were wont to do. Nearby a small stand of trees where there were equal parts shade and sunlight to sit in, were a number of colorful blankets, complete with cushions to either sit upon or rest against, and cunning little lap desks to enable people to take notes even while lounging. They formed a large horseshoe and at the open end stood a whiteboard with the same questions they had seen last week, as well as the five pointed star. However, of the five words that had been there previously, there was only one today:

Peace Through Structure )

"But when those systems and structures work, white is unparalleled. It understands the need for both moral and civil laws - moral laws shape how people think and the civil laws control how they act. Together, these two forms of structure create a framework that helps ensure individuals are working for the benefit of the group. There is a reason that the concepts that white values most are the underpinnings of most societies; more than anything else, white wants us to succeed as a group. To set aside selfishness, recklessness, and carelessness, and truly embrace our fellows, to care about each other as we care about ourselves, and to ensure that everyone has a chance to live peacefully, with their needs met - not simply physical, but emotional, spiritual, and mental, as well."

[And now in the right place]

"You could have told them about the cycle," Thor appeared to be grumbling to thin air as he set up behind the bar at the Devil's Nest.

I'll get to that, the ghost on one of the bar stools said serenely. There's a whole semester to cover.

"The cow is rather random without knowing about it."

The cow is rather random even if you do know about it. Why a cow?

"Why not a cow?" Thor countered, ignoring the 'he's talking to himself again' look he was getting from Tiny.

Norse Mythology, Thursday, Second Period

"In the beginning," Don told his students, "there was a cow. Actually, in the beginning there was a void," but not Don's void. A different void. "An abyss, really. Ginnungagap, the abyss between Muspelheim, the realm of fire, and Niflheim, the realm of ice. The heat from the fire began to melt the ice, and the water formed Ymir, the first of the giants, who produced more giants from his armpit sweat while he slept. Enter the cow. Where did the cow come from? Doesn't matter. The cow licked at salt in the ice--because there was salt in the ice--and uncovered the first of the Aesir, Buri, frozen in the ice. Once he thawed out, Buri married one of the giants, Bestla, and their descendants, three brothers, Odin, Vili, and Ve, killed Ymir and constructed our world, Midgard, from his corpse. The sky is his skull, the oceans are his blood, and so forth." Fun stuff. "Later, Odin and his brothers made the first humans, Ask and Embla, from a pair of tree trunks." A fact which had led to Don staring at his hands wondering what his body was made of for at least twenty minutes. "But that's another story.

"A lot of cultures' creation myths start with a void. A nothing from which everything springs. The meeting of fire and ice, the importance of water to creation, these are all common motifs. But I do have to admit that I get stuck on where the cow comes from. So. What's your take on this story?"

Pixie Dust; Thursday [01/15].

After last week's whole argyle fiasco, walking in to discover that Pixie Dust was now apparently overstocked with hats left Luma eying all those hats and the other employees with a firm level of skepticism and suspicion.

"So is it that we're doing new themes every week?" she wondered, but at least, if that were the case, this was going in a slightly more positive direction in her opinion. In fact, in her downtime, you would absolutely find her in front of one of the mirrors, trying on a variety of different hats for herself, especially since the variety was vast, and she could just ignore or pretend she didn't see any of the truly hideous or objectionable ones.

Pixie Dust is open!

Cinema Studies, Thursday, Period One

The Danger Shop was set up with a projector and somehow even more popcorn than last week. How? Don't ask silly questions.

"So, we're starting out strong on movies this week," Jane said as the projector was spooling it up. How had they gotten an old fashioned projector to play movies? Reasons. Aesthetic reasons.

Cara seemed suspiciously cheerful. "Today's is based on real events," she said. "Or at least it resembles something that actually happened on the island."

Notice how she didn't specify what those events were.

"That could mean a lot of things," Jane muttered as the movie started up on the screen. "But everyone, enjoy the movie!"

And remember, at no point that you been promised good movies.

WTFH - Fandom Radio [Thurs, Jan 15th]

Why are my notes covered in...this is going to take hours to clean off.

*chittering*

Yes, I do blame you, Leroy. Thanks for asking.

Up at the School, The Long Con learned the rules of conning, Creative Writing wrote down ideas on a 'White Board of Doooom', and Glitter! did arts and crafts, which explains a few things.

There was a castle of books in the Library, where Arden explained phones to Sairis, and tried to figure out when Mardi Gras was with Gray.

Nothing much happened in the Dorms, while in Town, Liliana was asleep in bed, as opposed any of the other, surely more newsworthy places she could be sleeping. Over Easy had some kind of waffle cake pop thing that I have multiple pages of notes debating the exact details of, Adrian was bearing gifts at Pick Your Posion, mostly for Pam, though Rey got kisses out of it. At Furnado, Prompto used Stark visiting the dogs to distract his child, while Caleb came looking for a job. Dogs visited, Stark went home to celebrate his birthday with a cupcake.

Granted, this situation was not at all helped by Saffron constantly and loudly demanding to be fed and then voicing her displeasure that her dish was not full enough for her liking, but still.

She was working on a total overhaul of the Kickstarter game recs board, complete with hand drawn and colored cutouts of various fantasy and sci-fi creatures, so the counter was a little bit of a mess. Oops.

Fandom Island Museum, Thursday Daytime

Khonshu had been keeping Steven and Marc busy of late.

Well, all right, mainly Marc but they were a package deal so whoever Khonshu asked for couldn't exactly go it alone, could they?

Regardless, it had meant more time back home on things which weren't pleasant holidays.

Steven wasn't thrilled about it for any number of reasons. He knew Marc wasn't entirely happy about it either. It was difficult to fully complain, though. They'd had years of largely being left alone to do as they liked on the island. A deal was a deal. They'd both agreed to be Khonshu's avatar, so they could hardly complain when asked to fulfill their part of the bargain. Particularly when Khonshu was keeping his about not asking them to murder anyone.

Still. It rankled. It felt lopsided in a way Steven couldn't fully articulate. Nothing he could put his finger on though. More something he chewed on in the back of his head, as it were.

At least today nothing had been asked so there Steven was, behind the museum's Welcome Desk as usual, ready to help any visitors who might have need of him.

MHA #8, Wednesday evening

Stark had spent his assigned birthday as a mostly usual Wednesday. At least a usual Wednesday these days.

His morning had started with squirrels and radio. Then there had been Glitter. Then he'd gone to the animal shelter to visit some dogs. Visiting with Noctra and her father had been a bonus.

He'd taken himself (but not any dogs) for a walk in spite of it being winter and then he'd gone to JGoB for a cupcake. Birthdays needed dessert, didn't they? The staff at the bakery had handed over multiple cupcakes for the price of one, and candles.

That was why Stark was now seated on his couch with a cupcake on the table in front of him, complete with lit candle. There was no singing. But he did make a wish. Maybe more than one.
